The new fire station derives its unique character from a sensitive approach to the existing site and a response to the seemingly challenging constraints. The building typology developed emerged as a logical consequence of the numerous functional requirements of a fire station and the need for extensive outdoor space. As a single-storey structure, the fire station is set into the slope and merges gently into it along its outer flanks.
The dynamic operations of the fire station are reflected in a clear separation of functions and an optimised floor plan structure without disruptive intersections. The vehicle hall, with its six parking bays, is positioned centrally as the core, with direct connections to the other functional areas. Slightly set back on either side, the foyer with the training area is situated to the east and the offices with the operations centre to the west. Running the entire length of the building, the ancillary wing housing the changing rooms, sanitary facilities and technical rooms is located in the rear area on the hillside.
The spacious forecourt, with its clear zoning, facilitates smooth arrival and departure of vehicles as well as the regular drills. On the eastern side of the forecourt, the training tower serves as a visual landmark, forming the highest point of the new development, and is positioned to provide a line of sight to the training area. Whilst the building is primarily designed to ensure smooth and rapid operational deployment, the training area and the forecourt to the east, facing the pond and green space, also provide the firefighters with a place to foster a sense of fellowship.
